The criminal act of human trafficking cases raise massively especially in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). According to data released by Task Force for the Prevention and Handling the criminal act of human trafficking (TPPO), the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, there are 2.648 victims indentified in Indonesia during 2015-2019. 88% of the victims are women and 12% are men. The number of Indonesian migrant workers’ coffins which sent repeatedly to Indonesia shows the human trafficking still happen and raise. Sister Laurentina the representative of Catholic Church in Kupang which collaborates with the government to fight against the criminal act of human trafficking held socialization about the impact of the issue in three villages in Malaka Regency. This socialization was the preventive to the issue held in Umto’os Village, Kletek Village and Rainawe Village.
The socialization about the dangerous of human trafficking and Safe Migration was on Tuesday (24/03) in Umato’os Village. On the next day, the socialization was in KLetek Village and in Rainawe Village was held to the victim’s family who was about to go to Malaysia for working by non-procedural way.
Sister Laurentina invited the participants of socialization in Umto’os Village to understand the difference between migration and human trafficking and the factors of migration. Migration which is an attempt to avoid the economic problem in their family turned into a human trafficking instead. The factors of being the human trafficking victims are lack of socialization, local pop culture, inappropriate recruitment procedures and false identity.
Sister Laurentina continued by explaining the faced problems by migrant workers in overseas such as economic problem in their family, marriage and divorce, cultural shifting, education and child care, and lifestyle. In order to make the participants or the migrant workers understand about their faced problem, sister Laurentina mentioned data of migrant workers’ corpses that sent to their family from 2019 to 2021. The situation in their workplaces is not in accordance with the work agreement and they even do not get their rights because there is no legal work agreement. The worse situation would probably happen after returning from overseas. It would be grateful if the migrant workers come back in good condition. There are many migrant workers come home with serious illness, mental disorders, pregnant with no husband, physically disabled, do not get salary, rejected by their family and other domestic problems.

Socialization from the UPT BP2MI Kupang in Umato’os Village
In the end of the socialization, Sister Laurentina explained about the cargo service and invited people to be brave to uncover the criminal act of human trafficking cases around them and involve in anti-human trafficking campaigns. The campaigns can be done through social media. She invited the participants to make short video for the Anti-Human Trafficking campaign immediately and share the videos on their social media.
Mr. Muhammad Geo Amang, sub coordinator of the UPT BP2MI regional East Nusa Tenggara started by explaining the main task of BP2MI in his explanation about Safe Migration. He explained the information how to migrate safely and the completed documents needed. The Migrant workers do not only need visa and passport but also health record, insurance, registered in the agency, competence certification and legal worker agreement.
“The Indonesian Migrant workers often face problems because they have not skill. They need job but they do not know where to go” he explained. Therefore, he insisted to come to the government. When the officers do not want to help the problem, they can be sued. Other thing that needs to be considered is not to invite people to go abroad for working without the legal document. For the village officials and parents, they need to pay attention of the people who come to recruit migrant workers. Check the permit letter from the agency clearly then confirm it to the regional Manpower and Transmigration Office.
“Be a competent, dignified and prosperous Indonesia Migrant Workers” he said in the end of the socialization in Rainawe Village. (Jenni Laamou) (Jeny Laamo)
