The big family of Indonesia Migrant Workers (KABARBUMI) held an online discussion to commemorate the World Ant-Human Trafficking day on Saturday (30/07/2022). The discussion carried “The Country of Human Trafficking Mafia: Listening to Victims’ Voices”
The discussion was different from previous discussions because there was a survivor of human trafficking in the discussion, Dorita Abanat. She is from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). She was telling her experience when she worked without getting paid and was exploited in ten months.

There were also three speakers who were ever arrested when they were fighting for Anti-Anti Human Trafficking. They were Sister Laurentina SDP from the Volunteer Team for Humanity Flores (Tim Relawan untuk Kemanusian Flores/TRUCK-F), Irwan Setiawan from Embun Pelangi Foundation, and Retno Dewi from the Central Executive Board (DPP) of the KABARBUMI Centre.
Sister Laurentina has often accompanied migrant workers and victims of human trafficking in NTT. She also takes care of the repatriation of the Indonesian migrant workers’ corpses.
“The human trafficking cases in NTT increase. There are almost a hundred people move to Batam every day. This happens because the strong networking of the perpetrator of the human trafficking” sister Laurentina explained.
Irwan asked about country’s contribution in eradicating the act of human trafficking. He said that there are several task forces of the Anti-Human Trafficking but we still do not find and see their workings and contributions. It can be seen of the many cases which still happen and increase in Indonesia.
“The criminal act of human trafficking is a transnational crime same with the drugs and terrorism cases. However, the government has formed the countermeasure agencies of the drugs and the terrorism cases but for the act of human trafficking cases is only formed by task forces through the presidential decree,” Irwan explained.
Retno added about strategies which have been done by the KABARBUMI recently in the discussion.
“We are strengthening at basis, in rural areas or villages which is the most vulnerable of being targeted as victims of human trafficking. Moreover, the KABARBUMI also always strives to increase the capacity and ability of the members and administrators through several events such as discussion and seminar. Retno said.
The discussion was very active. The participants were very enthusiast in giving response and questions to the speakers. The discussion started at 9 pm and ended at 10.45 pm western Indonesia time (WIB). The participants were still enthusiast but the discussion must be ended considering about the time especially for the participants in NTT and Hong Kong.
The enthusiasm of the participants suggested to hold following-up discussion. They created a WhatsApp group in order to make them easier to communicate and to inform of the following discussion.
The discussion closed with taking photos together session and praying for the victims of the criminal act of human trafficking. They hope the victims of human trafficking will decrease. Be aware to fight against the criminal act of human trafficking in Indonesia. (Roudhotul Jannah)
